    Healing From the Center

    My blog has been quiet for the month as I have been focused on seeing clients, creating my Spring Workshop and taking a marketing course with Simply Be agency based here in Chicago.  I have a nice flow of clients but have a desire to reach more people with the information and tools I have learned that are so effective in improving health and well-being. Expanding my reach requires marketing and putting myself out there. This is at direct odds with that shy part of me that truly hates self-promotion, selling, adding to people’s in-boxes and to the noise of an already cluttered internet space. I would so much rather just quietly go about my work with people magically finding me¦that is¦Magical thinking!

     

    In sharing with the marketing group, I learned the value of what I do, what I have to share and the potential to be of service. I learned the importance of sharing my own personal healing story; what they call, “owning your shit.” And the importance of sharing my success stories, my unique insights and how I integrate the areas of physical, mental/emotional well-being with the spiritual; this is what they call “leveraging your gifts.” I learned to embrace my science geek side who delights when current science validates what ancient wisdom leaders have known for thousands of years.

    How do we find health and well-being when we are at odds with ourselves and the world?

    One of the exercises was to come up with a headline or tagline that summarizes what I do. This involved making many lists, asking others for input, soul searching, frustratingly drawing blanks and then it hit “ Healing From the Center. I felt that instant surge of energy “ like the clouds parting and the sun shining through with angelic voices.  Yes, this is it!  I pitched it to several people. The response I got was consistent. Most people took a deep breath and relaxed when they heard it, a smile on their face, “that sounds good, yes, I know what you mean, that speaks to my heart.”  People intuitively understood without having to explain too much what I meant.

     

    Healing From the Center is an approach that acknowledges and leads with our heart. How do we find health and well-being when we are at odds with ourselves and life? Healing from the Center acknowledges how life can knock us off-center but with a bit of direction and remembering we can find our way home. That home is our natural state of peace and happiness, from which we can create health and well-being. However, when we are off-center, we end up leading with our over-active minds or unconsciously with our defensive nervous system. Our childhood and other difficult and traumatic events in our lives teach our nervous system to respond to the world in a way that prioritizes our safety and survival. Yay “ we have a brilliant system that keeps us alive! The problem comes when that system gets stuck in overdrive and we end up reacting to dangers that aren’t there and we miss all the cues of safety, beauty and joy that are here. That nervous system stuck in overdrive can lead to many physical and mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, autoimmune disease, digestive disorders, sleep issues, headaches, heart disease, and on and on.

    Healing From the Center is an approach that includes both top-down and bottom-up approaches that help to heal and integrate the body, mind and heart.  There are many modalities that focus on one of these approaches, like talk therapy, meditation, mind-body practices, acupuncture, dietary changes, supplements, medication, etc. These are all wonderful and many are necessary but as stand alone modalities are not sufficient. If the core wound is separation from our heart, our place of connection with our Source, ourselves and others, then why not start there?

    Are you feeling brain fog, fatigue or lack of motivation? Or maybe you feel energy again, giddiness after walking with a friend without a mask or adrenaline after eating at a restaurant after you’ve been fully vaccinated. Many have anxiety about re-emerging and being around other people.

    Welcome to the “pandexit”, the final phase of the pandemic coined by the self-described Nerdy Girls from a wonderful resource called “Dear Pandemic”. You can find their posts on social media as well.

    I’m happy to report it’s all normal!  We’ve been through a collective trauma this past year and half so how we emerge will be very unique to each one of us.

    The good news is the body/mind likes to be healthy, happy and connect with others.

    The good news is the body/mind likes to be healthy, feel happy and connect with others. That’s our natural state. Given the right conditions, you will hopefully regain your energy, anxiety will become less and less as we allow ourselves some freedom as restrictions are lifted. Of course depending on your vaccination status, you will need to weigh your risks with certain activities. So, what are those right conditions?

    How To Recover from Long Term Stress:

    • Sleep!  Go to bed early, sleep in a cold dark room, limit screen time 2 hours prior to bed time or wear blue light filtering glasses.
    • Exposure:  Start slow at socializing if you feel anxious at the thought. Walk with another vaccinated friend outdoors – super safe! Have a meal outdoors with a group. Stretch but not too much out of your comfort zone. We are wired for and crave connection so you will literally be swimming in feel-good neuro-chemicals that will help you feel at ease and wanting more.This will help you build up slowly.
    • Movement:  If you are exhausted, over-exercising will just keep you in a stress response so rather than running, choose walks in nature or bike rides. Add a friend or two to boost your mood.
    • Mindful breathing: Just becoming aware of the breath helps you connect with your body and your nervous system. It naturally slows down. If you are anxious you can be more intentional and inhale to a count of 4 and exhale to a count of 6 to turn off the stress response. Stress becomes a habit that we aren’t even aware of. Tuning into your breath several times/day helps to create new neural pathways.
    • Savor!  We have had over a year of alarming headlines and stories. What next?? We have become hyper vigilant and focused on the negative. This is a normal response from the brain that wants to keep you safe. We can re-wire this pattern with intentional savoring. When doing your daily activities, simply notice something beautiful or joyful or anything that makes you happy. Notice it for 20-30 seconds to actually create those new pathways in the brain and nervous system. Stop and enjoy simple moments during your day. Keep a savoring journal.  Think of those moments at night before you sleep for even more effect.
    • Nutrition: Opt for nutrient dense fruits and vegetables, good sources of protein, and stay away from sugar and the uppers (caffeine) and downers (alcohol) too  many people have gotten hooked on this past year and half. Everything you eat and drink is energy and information that directs every cell of your body. Nurture yourself with the best food possible!
    • Compassion for self and others: This has been a difficult year for everyone. Allow yourself to feel those feelings and give space to others to process theirs. Fatigue and sluggishness may be signs there are emotions that haven’t been processed.

    I don’t think life will ever go back to what it was. Good thing or bad thing? Who knows?  I do believe that the universe is evolving and expanding towards growth and love. With that in mind perhaps some reflection questions would be helpful as you re-emerge so you can use this opportunity to create a life that better aligns with you:

    1. What loss did you experience in the past year?
    2. What new habits or gifts emerged or unexpected blessings?
    3. What changes have you noticed about yourself?
    4. What changes do you want to make permanent, what changes need some loving attention?
    5. What do you want to include again that you really missed?

    I am and I’m sure you are too! Spring is the hardest season for me.     How Are You Wired?

    Did you know that your brain and nervous system are constantly monitoring for cues of safety and danger?  Decisions are made based on sensory input in a split second and happen below our awareness.  This is called neuroception. For many of us, our system can misinterpret these cues from our environment and we react to a danger when in reality no real danger is present. We have a tendency to feel more stress than others which can result in decreased physical and mental health which can look like the following:

    • Social and emotional difficulties
    • Sensitivities to sound and other sensory processing difficulties
    • Anxiety and trauma related challenges
    • Learning, cognition and attention difficulties
    • Digestive issues
    • Other stress related physical and mental conditions

     

    Shift Your State, Shift Your Story

    Our Internal Control Center – The Vagus Nerve

    The mind and body are connected through the vagus nerve, which is the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, stretching from the brainstem to the intestines. It is our internal control center, allowing the brain to monitor and receive information about many of our bodily functions.

    The vagus nerve helps to regulate many of the body’s functions including the heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, digestion, and even speaking. As the body takes in information, the vagus nerve processes the signals and cues from the world around us and, in turn, determines how we react through three physiological states:

    • Parasympathetic / Ventral Vagal state” our centered true self state, where all social interaction, connection and productive thinking occurs
    • Sympathetic state” feeling of threat or danger, and feeling the need to either fight or flee from a situation to seek safety
    • Dorsal Vagal state” our freeze state, when we feel our lives are so immediately threatened that we become immobilized

     

    Change State to Regulate:

    We all process cues and signals from the world around us differently. Some of us may naturally feel more calm and spend more time in a ventral vagal state while others, due to genetic makeup and life experience may feel more threatened or endangered and default to sympathetic or dorsal vagal state. This is especially true of those who experience the effects of trauma, or with conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, autism or PTSD.

    Stimulating the vagus nerve and providing cues of safety can enable our nervous system to reset and change our physiological state ” helping us to more easily access our ventral vagal state and to more consistently feel safe and calm.Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a five hour listening intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience. Based on Dr. Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, the SSP activates the vagus nerve,  calms our physiological and emotional state, we feel better, we think more clearly and we connect with others better.  Participants report feeling more alive, more awake, more flexible in their responses to the world.

    The Safe:

    Before the listening begins, clients learn how to map their own nervous system.  This is a bottom-up approach, meaning, clients are guided away from the thinking mind and analysis into the body, honoring what is present and what is needed.  Personal cues of safety and danger are discovered and clients are given tools to use to learn to shift their state from danger to safety.  The experience is one of discovery, nourishment, empowerment and partnership.

    The Sound:

    Through re-toning the vagus nerve through the Safe and Sound Protocol, the nervous system is able to receive, process and respond to those environmental cues and signals from the world around us in a more effective way.  This helps us to learn how to more easily and consistently feel better regulated in the face of our day to day challenges.

    The SSP uses specially-filtered music to train the neural network associated with listening to focus on the frequency range of the human voice. What you hear, and how you hear it, influences how your body responds. This protocol enhances or  allows for additional therapies, learning, and other healing modalities to work more effectively.

    You Are Probably Breathing Wrong

    Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art is a 2020 bestseller by James Nestor. This book is a fascinating and informative read and that’s from someone who has studied breathing and its connection to health for decades! We breathe 25,000 times/day and with each breath, we send signals to our body that can result in health and well-being or dis-ease.   I will do my best to summarize a few of his findings from extensive study, self-experimentation and interviews with “pulmonauts” from around the world.  (Photo credit: Max van den Oetelaar)

    How we breathe is as important as what we eat, how much we exercise, whatever genes we inherit. It’s that vital. – James Nestor

    1. Breath through your nose:  This was the biggest and most important takeaway for me. Breathing through your mouth triggers hormones that stimulate the stress response. That’s not all,  Nestor links mouth breathing to dental cavities, blood pressure, sleep apnea, and mood. The book describes how he participated in a self-experiment in collaboration with the Sinus Center at Stanford University.  He plugged his nose for 30 days and measured various markers of health. At the end of the 30 days, his health deteriorated greatly and he felt horrible. All of that reversed when he unplugged his nose. The benefits of nose breathing are related to how this kind of breathing moistens and purifies the air coming in. This leads to greater oxygenation of the blood and increase in nitric oxide which is associated with better blood circulation.  I have been trying to breath only through my nose when exercising and it has improved my recovery and also gives me more energy to exercise longer.  Try it!
    2. The book outlines many breathing techniques but he suggests the ideal breath is symmetrical – inhale to a count of 5.5 and exhale to a count of 5.5. This slows down the breath and creates a coherent rhythm in your heart.
    3. A longer exhale is relaxing!  This has been known for a long time. You can notice that when you inhale the heart speeds up a bit and slows down with the exhale. When the exhale is longer than the inhale, the parasympathetic nervous system kicks in and that calms your mind and body. This breathing creates coherence between all systems of the body. Shallow, faster breathing is linked to anxiety.
    4. You can strengthen and improve your capacity to breathe. There are exercises that will improve your lungs’ capacity. There are deep sea free-divers that can hold their breath for around 10 minutes! Over time shallow breathing decreases the range of the diaphragm and limits our lung capacity. Posture also has an effect on the use of the diaphragm, breathing and the nervous system as Donna Byrne from Pilates Central in Evanston teaches.

    The breath is a common thread in what ails the earth and humans, from the fires on the West Coast to COVID-19.  Maybe what will heal both begins with the breath. With breath awareness, human beings can learn to slow down, become more present to themselves, others and the world around them.  Do yourself a favor and take a break after you read this and just take 5 slow, deep breaths, focusing on extending your exhale. Notice throughout the day, are you breathing through your mouth?  Are you breathing fast and shallow?  Slow down and breathe.

    Literally everyone I talk to or am coaching now is really done with our current situation! It has been 6 months since the pandemic started and no end is in sight. Schools are trying to start but most have decided on e-learning from home.  Summer helped with sun and nature and seeing friends and family outside.  But the cooler and rainy weather in Chicago has reminded us how quickly the seasons change and soon we will be back inside. I have been reading a lot about resiliency and why some thrive in a crisis and others don’t.  I came across a theory by psychologist Dr. Merete Wedell-Wedellsborg that describes 3 stages of responding to a crisis that I found rang true and hope you will find it helpful as well.     Stage one:  Emergency phase:  Urgency of a new situation tends to be accompanied by a surge of energy and focus. This is when we spring into action to meet the crisis. We are creative, problem solving, adapting, and surprisingly upbeat.  We can do this!  The nervous system’s flight or fight mechanism prepares us well to meet challenges, pumping energy to the muscles and our brain.

     

    Stage two:  Regression or Burn-out:  Months of adapting to doing everything differently have us drained and low on energy reserves.  In military terms, our surge capacity is depleted. The nervous system, having been in high alert, is taxed so we start feeling fatigued, depressed, anxious, on edge. We hit a wall yet the floodwaters can’t be held back so start feeling overwhelmed.  CDC reports that as of late June, 40% of U.S. adults reported struggles with mental health or substance use.  We look for ways to soothe, escape, and cope that are frequently from a less mature time but are things that give temporary comfort. We regress to drinking or eating too much, spending hours watching TV, not wanting to take responsibility for work or family.  What this stage is trying to tell us is that the nervous system and body urgently need time to restore and fill the reserves.

     

    Stage three:  Recovery phase:  Since there is no clear end to the current situation this phase now is more about learning to adapt to a less than desirable situation. We need to find ways to move out of survival mode and to find new opportunities.  One effective and important way is to find unique ways to find meaning and contribute something of value to the greater good for one’s family, work community and beyond. Like a symphony, we each play an instrument that has an important role to the sound of the whole.  It doesn’t have to be grand; what if your contribution was to be a calm, loving presence for someone in your life?  That could make a profound difference!

    We need to build our reserves to meet the ongoing challenges this time is bringing.  Fill your resiliency bank with the following ideas that don’t take much time. (Photo credit:  Damir Spanic, www.unsplash.com)

    • Expect less of yourself. Give yourself time to rest.
    • Take five: Five minutes to move your body: walk around the block between zoom calls or child care responsibilities.  Stretch your body helps to relieve stress and quiet the mind.
    • 5-4-3-2-1: Mindfulness moments: Tune into your senses by becoming aware of 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. This helps you connect with your body and balance your brain.
    • Gratitude: Stop right now and focus on your heart and call to mind someone or something you are grateful for. What are you grateful for about yourself? End your day with coming up with 3 things from the day that brought you joy.  What’s the silver lining in this situation?  This brings your whole system into coherence, allowing the body and mind to function optimally again.
    • Stop multi-tasking or thinking about the next thing you need to do. I know work/school/family boundaries are blurred now, but bringing your full attention to the thing you are doing now will help expend less mental energy and leave you with more at the end of the day.
    • Fully connect with someone “ a smile, a quick phone call, a hug. Savor face-face interaction as that signals our nervous system to relax.
    • Create boundaries in your home with family members. Find time to unplug and just be quiet, be it a closet, a car, a night-time or early morning walk.  Now’s the time to be creative and resourceful;  but fighting reality won’t help. It is in the quiet we hear our own inner guidance.
    • Prioritize sleep and limit screen time.
    • Plan healthy meals most of the time but enjoy a few splurges too!

     

    Saying Yes to situations you don’t like but can’t change builds resiliency so your next challenge will seem easier and you will handle it with grace and ease.  As Viktor Frankl said, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.
