In our ongoing efforts working with Kona to bring the IRONMAN World Championship back to its historic home base, we were able to establish a two-day race in early 2022 to help work through deferrals and ultimately came to an agreement to continue with two days of racing in Kona in 2023 as well. Based on our research and feedback this is what we believe is best for the future of the sport and also what our athletes are asking for – to race together, and in Kona. This is true for both men and women, different age groups, different levels of experience.

Since announcing the format change to split locations in 2022, we have closely listened to our athletes through various mediums – whether that was written athlete feedback, athlete surveys, post event feedback and direct conversations with athletes, clubs, coaches and communities. Most recently, and perhaps most significantly, we conducted a community-wide survey and received feedback from over 10,000 individuals regarding the future of the IRONMAN World Championship. The community survey fielded in December 2024 was conducted to challenge the hypotheses we identified during data analysis around athlete participation patterns and behavior. We believed it was extremely important to combine quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to truly understand the preferences of our community. The results from the community survey gave us significant insights – some of which validated the data we saw and some which offered us different angles to research. The volume and diversity of respondents gives us great confidence that the sentiments held in the survey are representative of our community of age group athletes, pro athletes, media, partners, women, men, old and young.

When asked to rank potential World Championship formats, scenarios that did not include Kona polled lowest, including a “globally rotating two-day event.” Importantly, this was true regardless of age or gender, or when considering a single or two-day format for locations other than Kona. In addition, aligned with IRONMAN’s goal of growing the sport of triathlon, it was expected that split locations for men and women’s racing would lead to greater exposure for all and more women participating in the sport of triathlon. In 2026 the IRONMAN World Championship will undertake a format change, in response to feedback from the community. In parallel, we are pleased to announce the host location for the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. The IRONMAN Group CEO Scott DeRue shares this information in an open letter to the IRONMAN Community. The captivating capital of Canada, Ottawa, offers the perfect venue for a summer IRONMAN, with kilometers of gorgeous landscapes, warm hospitality, and those iconic Canadian delights like poutine and maple syrup.

• Our partnership extension brings another pinnacle event in triathlon to Nice in both 2026 and 2028, marking Nice as the anchor location in Europe for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

The decision was made with the best interests of the athletes, the community and the integrity of the sport at the forefront based on the analysis of athlete feedback and athlete behavior. Upholding IRONMAN’s core values, the IRONMAN World Championship will undergo operational and logistical changes in reimagining the event to provide a platform for professional and age group women and men to showcase their athleticism and inspire future generations. For example, we will be expanding the time between start waves for professional men, professional women and age group athletes, and enhancing our broadcast coverage to allow for elevated and equal coverage.

In our conversations with the City of Nice, we spoke about how we could evolve our host partnership agreement with them in a way that would work for our athletes, while also building on our important relationship with the City. As demonstrated by the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, Nice offers an exceptional environment for IRONMAN 70.3 racing, and a wonderful host venue for the 6000+ athletes we expect to draw across two days. It is a testament to its legacy that the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship will return again in 2026, 2028 and beyond, in addition to also hosting fan-favorite IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 in-season races.
